Wall Grazing | Difference From Wall Washing
Wall grazing and wall washing are both techniques used to illuminate walls, but they create very different effects.
With wall washing, the aim is to illuminate a wall as evenly as possible. The light is distributed across a large surface, creating a calm and uniform appearance that can also make the room feel more spacious.
With wall grazing, the light source is positioned much closer to the wall. The light skims across the surface, creating stronger shadows that emphasise small irregularities and textures. This technique can be particularly effective on natural stone, brick, wood and other textured surfaces.
On a completely smooth wall, a pronounced grazing effect is not always desirable, as even small imperfections can become more visible. The choice between the two techniques therefore depends greatly on the wall and the effect you want to achieve.
The luminaire, beam angle, distance from the wall and spacing between the light points also play an important role.
